Highlight: The first regional preparatory meeting for the 2015 meetings of the conferences of the parties to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions for the Asia-Pacific region was held in Jakarta from 19 to 20 March 2015.
It was held back-to-back with a regional workshop in support for the ratification and effective implementation of the Minamata Convention on Mercury which took place from 17 to 18 March 2015, including a joint session on 18 March 2015.
The meeting was attended by 155 participants, including representatives from 39 parties, 6 intergovernmental organizations, 6 non-governmental organizations and 6 Basel and Stockholm conventions regional centres.
Participants exchanged views on the documents of the 2015 meetings of the conferences of the parties as they related to the items of the programme of the African regional preparatory meeting.
Organizers: The regional preparatory meeting was organized by the Secretariat with support from the Basel Convention Regional Centre for South East Asia (BCRC-SEA) / Stockholm Convention Regional Centre Indonesia (SCRC-Indonesia) in Jakarta, Indonesia. The Secretariat collaborated closely with the interim secretariat of the Minamata Convention on the organization of the back to back meetings. The regional preparatory meeting was organised thanks to the generous financial contributions from Switzerland and the European Union.
Meeting Objectives: The objectives of the meeting were to provide an opportunity to participants to familiarize themselves with the items on the provisional agendas and the organization of work of the meetings of the conferences of the parties to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions on 4-15 May 2015. It also aimed at enabling parties to discuss regional priorities and regional positions for the meetings.
