A series of technical assistance activities are being implemented to support Parties in the Central and Eastern European and the Asia-Pacific regions to strengthen national legal frameworks, to take measures to prevent and combat illegal traffic and trade in hazardous chemicals and waste under the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions. These activities are financed through the generous support of the European Union.
The project on legal frameworks and international trade control measures under the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions includes regional and national level activities. It aims to support Parties in examining existing legal frameworks to implement the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions, including steps to strengthen those frameworks such as review and development of legislation. Through regional training for a variety of stakeholders and national-level projects, awareness of the Conventions’ provisions will be raised, increasing capacities of Parties in the Central and Eastern European and the Asia-Pacific regions to implement trade control measures under the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions.
The activities under this project will train and raise awareness of obligations and procedures under the three conventions; encourage experience sharing and build relations between Parties. As legal frameworks are a cornerstone, strengthened legal frameworks and improved capacities to implement trade control measures will improve the overall implementation of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions. In this context, online regional training has been organized in 2021 - 2022 for the Asia, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and Pacific regions.
Following a call for expression of interest from Parties, three national projects in the Asia and Pacific regions have been selected to be implemented alongside regional activities. These national level activities will address different specific aspects of implementation of the three conventions in Papua New Guinea, the State of Palestine and Turkmenistan.
