The national project in Papua New Guinea is being implemented as part of the project on legal frameworks and international trade and control measures under the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions, with generous financial support of the European Union.
The project is intended to develop and adopt regulations to implement the Stockholm and Rotterdam Conventions in Papua New Guinea. The project will also strengthen capacity within customs and other key stakeholders to understand Papua New Guinea’s obligations.
The project, which is being organized with the Pacific Regional Centre for Training and Technology Transfer for the Joint Implementation of the Basel and Waigani Conventions in the South Pacific region (SPREP), will:
- Develop and adopt regulations implementing the Stockholm and Rotterdam Conventions in Papua New Guinea under its Environment Act 2000;
- Strengthen the capacity within customs and other key stakeholders to understand the Party’s obligations and requirements with respect to the Basel, Stockholm and the Rotterdam Conventions;
- Develop awareness raising materials ;
- Organize capacity building workshops.
