Case Studies on integrating a gender perspective

Background

Two case studies highlighting links between gender and the BRS conventions were undertaken in accordance with the BRS Gender Action Plan in order to identify and highlight the different impacts of hazardous chemicals and wastes on men and women, boys and girls.

Balifokus Foundation Indonesia, jointly with Women Engage for a Common Future (WECF) International carried out a scoping study to investigate the dimensions of implementing the BRS conventions in Indonesia, between 19 and 24 February 2017. A similar study in collaboration with The Women Environmental Programme (WEP) Nigeria and WECF International was carried out in Nigeria between 9 January and 10 February 2017.

Two further case studies

The BRS Secretariat, together with Women Engage for a Common Future (WECF) International, is preparing two scoping studies in Bolivia and Kyrgyzstan in order to study the different impacts of hazardous chemicals and wastes with respect to gender and to promote the consideration of gender issues in hazardous chemicals and waste management at the national and regional levels.

The methodologies for the studies will be similar to those undertaken in Indonesia and Nigeria. This will include multi-stakeholder consultations in each country, including interviews with key decision makers and experts, visits to impacted communities, workers, employers. These additional studies will help to identify region-specific challenges and overarching challenges when facing mainstreaming gender in the implementation of the BRS conventions.

The case studies will be made available in July 2019.
