Strengthening Institutional Capacity to Control Illegal Trade of Hazardous Chemicals and Waste in Afghanistan

The project “Strengthening Institutional Capacity to Control Illegal Trade of Hazardous Chemicals and Waste in Afghanistan” is being implemented as part of the project on legal frameworks and international trade and control measures under the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions, with generous support of the European Union.

The project is intended to focus on strengthening efforts on the ground to control illegal trade of hazardous chemicals and waste and give effect to the control procedures of the Rotterdam Convention in particular.

The project will:

  • Develop and arrange for endorsement by stakeholders of terms of reference for establishing a Task Force for the control of illegal trade of hazardous chemicals and waste;
  • Assess nationwide the existing trends of trade of chemicals and waste, as well as associated risks;
  • Develop and transmit Import Responses for chemicals listed in Annex III to the Rotterdam Convention, including organisation of a Consultation workshop with the National Chemical Committee (NCC).
