Background
Gender equality is an integral part of the implementation of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm (BRS) conventions. This project aims to provide a clearer understanding of the impact of hazardous wastes from a gender perspective, and to promote gender issues in hazardous chemicals and waste management at the national and regional levels.
This project is implemented by Women Engage for a Common Future (WECF) in coordination with the Secretariat. The project is funded by the Governments of Germany and Sweden.
Project objectives
- To develop an understanding by the Parties and stakeholders on the issue of gender equality, particularly in the context of BRS activities;
- To analyze issues in the scope of the BRS Conventions from the gender perspective, including identifying vulnerable groups and different impacts of hazardous chemicals and wastes on men and women, boys and girls;
- To promote the consideration of gender issues in hazardous chemicals and waste management at the national and regional levels.
Results to be achieved
- Scoping study results from Nigeria, Indonesia, Bolivia and Kyrgyzstan shall lead to an increased understanding of the gender dimensions from the four pilot country analyses, and a need for national gender-responsive capacity building;
- Capacity building and awareness raising materials on hazardous chemicals and wastes for stakeholder groups are adapted for the pilot projects;
- Specific stakeholder groups are aware of hazardous chemicals and wastes or practices that may expose those groups to harmful effects in the pilot countries;
- Measures addressing hazardous chemicals and wastes management and gender issues are taken into consideration at the national level through the pilot projects.
