Regional activities on legal frameworks and international trade control measures for the Pacific region

In-person and Online from 18 October to 20 October 2022

Highlights: Hybrid regional training is being organized for the Pacific to raise awareness on and support efforts to establish legal and institutional frameworks and international trade control measures under the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions, as well as enforcement, prevention and combatting of illegal traffic and trade in hazardous chemicals and wastes. Representatives of each of the participating 14 Pacific Island Countries will convene in selected venues in each country to connect online with each other and with experts globally. The training is being organized with the generous support of the European Union and will take place online from 18 to 20 October 2022.

Organizers: This training activity is being organized by the Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions in cooperation with the Pacific Regional Centre for Training and Technology Transfer for the Joint Implementation of the Basel and Waigani Conventions in the South Pacific region (SPREP).

Meeting objectives: The objectives of the workshop include increasing the knowledge and skills of the target audience on the following:

  • In-depth understanding of obligations and procedures under the three Conventions, and tools available to support Parties’ efforts;
  • How to enforce legal provisions and prevent and combat illegal traffic and trade in hazardous chemicals and wastes to implement the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions;
  • Experience sharing between Parties.

Target audience: The training will target designated contacts of the Parties to the Conventions (official contact points, focal points, designated national authorities, national focal points and competent authorities), customs, environmental inspectorate, police and other enforcement officials responsible for trade control of movements of hazardous chemicals and wastes, as well as decision makers involved in the development, drafting, approval, review and updating of legislation and other measures in the Pacific region. The Basel Convention Regional Centre and other appropriate regional structures of partner organizations such as the World Customs Organization (WCO), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), as well as representatives of other Parties will also participate in the regional training workshop.
